Thoughts on Our Fund Raising Effort!

Dear Church Family,

The mission of North Central Baptist Church has always been to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus commanded us to “make disciples of all the people groups” (Matthew 28:19). Everything we do must press us to reaching that goal. We can’t say, “Well, someone else has that responsibility.” We must know in our heart as a church that we are on mission with God in the harvest. As we think about the need to raise funds for a new building and debt retirement I want you to consider a few things.

There are times in the life of a church when it takes an all out effort of every member to accomplish a great task. I believe that this is one of those times for us. The Future Expansion Committee was right when they reported to the church that we needed educational space. We now have 10 Sunday School Classes that meet in the Auditorium at 10:55 following morning worship. We are grateful for our people doing this but there are obvious reasons why this is not the ideal situation. On Wednesday nights our church is a bee-hive of activity with Conversational English meetings for internationals, AWANA, Wednesday Night Supper, Youth Meetings, Choir practice and even more! People graciously meet in staircases and maintenance rooms. What a great problem to have! We have people coming to our church! But we can’t continue like this forever if we intend to grow. We need educational space.

Our Fund Raising effort is headed by Mr. Paul Waters as our Campaign Director. Mr. Waters is a wise and faithful leader. He has vision with the experience of leading many ministries at North Central. Helping him is Mike Weldon, Dr. Dwain Johnson, Dave Fox, and Wayne Thomas. It will take all of us getting involved in both prayer and  giving to make our building a reality. I want you to do two things: 1. Pray—we must bathe this effort in prayer and 2. Get involved—all of us will be needed in some capacity in our Fund Raising effort. We simply can’t just sit back.

You know what I love to do? I love to study Scripture and preach the Gospel. I love to share my faith and disciple people. I’m not really crazy about spending my time worrying about mortgage payments, building permits, modular vs. conventional construction, and raising money. But here is what is crystal clear to me: I don’t have the luxury of just doing what is comfortable to me. You might be thinking, “We shouldn’t be trying to raise money to build a building. I’d rather be studying the Bible with my friends or doing what ministers to me.” I really don’t think you have that luxury either. Consider the following.  As of today, our mortgage note is $1,408,341.31. Our mortgage payments are $11,200.00 (approx.) each month. If we pay this until the current note runs out (October 2017) we will pay the $11,200.00 each month for 82 more payments for a total mortgage expenditure of $918,400.00. You know what our balance will be on this loan at that point?  $1,189,380.57!  That’s right! We will still owe over 1 million dollars to the bank. I don’t think you or I have the luxury to just do what we’ve been doing. We must move forward and grow.

Let’s create a movement of believers on fire to live out the gospel. Part of this movement involves mortgage payments, building permits, site plans, and yes, raising money. I sense the Spirit of God moving across our hearts like never before, involving us in a campaign bigger than just a fund raising effort. This will result in men and women, boys and girls coming to know Jesus Christ and pushing back the walls of darkness.

It is a joy to be your Pastor,

Calvin J. Carr
