September the 12th is our 75th Birthday! We are celebrating in a huge way and want you to come! We have planned one magnificent celebration service to begin at 9:30am. Our own choir and orchestra will lead us in worship! Roger Breland and the Voices of Mobile will be our musical guests on this special day. Roger brought the group Truth here on many occasions in years past. Our people will be blessed by the memories and the Christ exalting music that Dr. Breland will share. We will have a special media presentation given to the gathered group that morning that will be snippet of our churches fabulous history. I will preach a special 75th Anniversary sermon. Following the service we will not have our usual Sunday School but will fellowship around a wonderful, complimentary BBQ lunch that will enable us to see old and new friends. Oh yes…one more thing. Everyone will receive a 75th Anniversary keepsake gift that will last a lifetime. You simply don’t want to miss this special day.

I am beginning this blog on Friday morning July 23rd at 10:30am. It is 10:30pm on Thursday night in Gainesville, Florida. Back on Monday, Jennifer and I boarded a flight from Orlando, Fl to Dallas, Tx. From there we flew to Los Angeles, CA. At 11:50pm we took off to go over the Pacific Ocean to fly to Hong Kong where we would pick up another flight into Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Four (4) count em four flights-a total of 31 hours to get here. We lost time on the calendar too. We left on Monday afternoon and arrived on WEDNESDAY at about 12:30pm! These last 2 days have been incredible. We have met many students who attend Nilai College/ University. Here students can do a 2 year degree and receive a diploma (sort of like our AA degree) and then go on to the University. Nilai does offer the University level of training and many choose to stay here to study. Our friends here have been great hosts. Jennifer and I are staying in what is known as a student house. This is in a Malaysian neighborhood. This morning Jennifer said, “Dad listen, there is someone singing.” The houses are connected and windows normally are open so you can hear. I couldn’t make out a word of the song.

Both Wednesday and Thursday nights we went to Bible studies for the College students. We met students from all over this part of the world. India, Pakistan, Africa (Kenya, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, I can’t think of all of them!) Indonesia and many more! This is a huge university town. Incredible opportunities here. We are meeting students and sharing meals with them.

Our friends are about to pick us up to take us to the site of the college retreat/conference. Guess what they are calling it? The Connexion Conference! Small world! It begins tonight. Remember Jennifer and I. I’ll continue to give you an update as we move along.

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Wow! What a day. We started the conference tonight at Cheras Baptist Church in Kuala Lumpur. There were approximately 150 students from 5 different Connexion Locations. The work that our friends here are involved in is targeting 4 different locations in the KL region and one about 4 hours away. Each of these regions is a hotbed of University activity. The universities here are more spread out. All of the students are not on just one or two campuses like in Gainesville. Each of the Connexion locations may minister to 4 or 5 universities or colleges. This is truly a place where the world comes to study. It reminds me so much of Gainesville in that the international community is at your doorstep.

The Connexion conference is the the annual gathering of all of the connexion locations of Malaysia. Our friends–I’ll call them John and Linda are the chief strategists over the connexion team. This invitation was a great honor for me. Tonight I preached on the subject “Man’s search for the Missing Puzzle Piece.” This is the lesson that we get from Solomon in Ecclesiastes. Solomon tried it all and said it was all “vanity” and the “chasing of the wind!” Not until he found his answer in a relationship with God was he happy. Following the meeting one young man came up to me named Robert and told me that he was from China. He told me that the message encouraged him to know that he was sent to KL by God so that he could find out about Christ and give his life to Christ! He evidently had been a believer for only two weeks.

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

This morning the meeting started at 10am. Well really, it started about 10:45am. But who is worried? We are in Malaysia. They really start the meeting when everyone gets there. These students had to sacrifice to get here. Some actually came from 4 hours away for the meeting. KL is huge and most drove about one hour to the meeting. I preached this morning on the “Uniqueness of Christ and the Resurrection.” This was an apologeticalmessage meant to give them some evidences for the Christian faith. It was somewhat like the “Do you have questions?” series that we did on Sunday nights recently at church. Following morning worship there were seminars offered to the students on all kinds of topics. Some topics included: Relationships, Evangelism, Living with a Missional mindset, Facebookand the Gospel, and Worship. Tonight in the final message I shared withthem from Mark 1:16 ff entitled: “Why would I ever want to follow this Jesus?” I shared with them the challenge to take the gospel to the world and become fishers of men.

I can’t get over the folks we have met here. I talked at length with a fellow from Damascus-that’s right Damascus, Syria. He is not a believer but has found needed fellowship and love at the Connexion house ministry and just came. I preached the gospel to him! He was extremely kind and open.

There are some stories that I can’t write about but will just have to tell you. My heart is broken for these students. So many of them from countries that we would not easily be able to enter and yet they are here in Malaysia. What an opportunity. I’m praying about how we can come back with some of our students next summer for this annual conference to help them. There is a group here from Summit church (Pastor J. D. Greer) from the Raleigh Durham area. I talked about the Florida Gators last night and a college student from UNC Chapel Hill named Matt came up to me and said that his dad went to GHS and grew up in Gainesville. He said that their family was committed to the Tar Heels (they all have graduated or attended there) but they are Gator fans as well.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

This morning I preached at Nilai International Christian Fellowship. This is a church plant on the campus of Nilai College and University. They are doing a series on Relationships and asked me to preach on the subject, “What a lady looks for in a Godly Man.” I gave them four qualities to look for in a man. Spiritual Leadership, Moral Purity, Integrity, and Initiative. Afterward the Pastor of the church asked for students that wanted to be prayed for to come to the front. My friend John , the pastor of the church and his wife, and I prayed for the students. Several young men came to me wanting to commit to being faithful young men. It was very encouraging. The fellowship is so important to these believers. We stayed around and fellowshipped after the service. The Pastor’s daughter gave announcements and asked that the entire church come forward for a picture. I will get that picture. I found out later that they do this every Sunday.

This afternoon Jennifer and I went withJohn to play Ultimate Frisbee withthe students. I played with students from Cameroon, Syria, Kenya, Nigeria, China, and Malaysia. It was a total blast! I scored twice. Not bad for my first time ever playing. Then, these guys turned it on! They are all outstanding soccer players. As we fellowshipped the young man from Syria wanted to know about American Football. Now that was a shocker. This guy doesn’t know one thing about the Gators or Coach Meyer, Donovan, or Tim Tebow. But he was open to talk to me about my culture. God is working in this young man’s life. Tonight, dinner with a Chinese Malaysian Banker (we’ll call him Chuck) who is a national partner in the work here. Exciting days!

Tonight, I learned of an amazing story. One of our leaders on the Connexion team was hosting 11 college students in his home so that they could come to the Connexion conference. Only two were believers. On Saturday night, following the conference, one of the non believers said to the team leader, “Hey, I’m going in here to take a shower. When I get out I want you to convert me!” Our Connexion leader led him to know Jesus!

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Today, our friends John and Linda took us to the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. This is a huge site for Hindu Worship. There is a statue that towers over the entrance of the caves. When we arrived, people were already climbing the steps to go into the cave to worship. In addition to worshipers, there were plenty of tourists. People were lighting incense and going up to certain temples to pray. It was extremely sad to me. The lostnessof these people is overwhelming. My friend John and I along with Linda and Jennifer said a prayer that asked Jesus Christ to break the bondage of sin over the people of Malaysia.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Today, we travel from our friends here in Kuala Lumpur to HongKong. By the time our friends in the states awaken on Tuesday morning, we will have taken off. The flight is three and one-half hours long. Our prayer is that we will sense an even greater mandate to reach the Asian people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We know of the Lord’s love for these people-it is our burden and love that must increase. I will update soon.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Our plane was a little delayed getting into Hong Kong. Imagine being in a new place on the other side of the world and you look up and there is a familiar face! Jonathan was there to meet us last night when we arrived. We exchanged some US dollars for Hong Kong dollars and loaded up in a taxi. Jonathan took us to the guest house that the IMB operates here. It was very nice. It is on the 19th floor of a high rise apartment building. We slept great.

Today we met them for breakfast at McDonalds-quite the experience. This McDonalds is located at Victoria Harbor. From there we went to the IMB office here in Hong Kong. Jen and I looked around in a huge mall while Jonathan and Shelley took their girls to the school that they are considering.

This is an awesome place. There are seven (7) million people who live here. Everyone takes the subway. Picture thousands and thousands of people just always moving-going from place to place. There is a great need for the gospel here. Our friends Jonathan and Shelly are in very strategic work here. What an awesome privilege to know them. Tomorrow we board our plane for Home!!!

The most crucial time in the relay race is the baton exchange. How many Olympic runners have lost their race trying to pass the baton to the next runner? The same is true of our passing the responsibility of the gospel to the next generation. Paul spoke clearly of the importance of these issues when he declared to Timothy, “And the things that you’ve heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit to faithful men, who will teach others also.” ( 2 Tim 2:2) This is one area that we must get it right! Dr. Thom Rainer wrote about this recently in the Facts and Trends magazine published by Lifeway. He pointed out that the generation born between 1980 and 1991 is known as the “millennial generation”. According to extensive research, only 15% of these young people are followers of Jesus Christ. We are dropping the baton! We must do better to reach them and equip them. My prayer is that North Central will be a place that properly disciples and equips the next generation to multiply the gospel for years to come! Look for some young person to encourage-some younger believer to disciple! Don’t drop the baton!

What an awesome thing that the 4th of July falls this year on Sunday! Why don’t you join us at North Central for Worship at 9:30am? Our guests will be the Word of Life College Ensemble from Hudson, Fl under the direction of Tom Phillips. These students have a contagious walk with Jesus. I appreciate their willingness to come and lead us in worship. We will look at a passage of scripture that I believe is relevant for our times. Israel was in turmoil. The pillars of society were weakened considerably and the followers of God wondered what to do. Sound familiar? Come join us for a time to think about our response as God’s children to the drifting of our nation. I believe that you will be encouraged!

The commitment that they made reads like this: All I am…All I have…All I ever hope to be…I now and forever dedicate to the Lord Jesus Christ for His use and glory, absolutely, unconditionally, now and forever. Now Lord, hold me to it. This the commitment that our youth made. My prayer is that all of us would say “Yes” to the Lordship of Christ!

Tonight I had a meeting with the older guys at the youth camp. I asked them what God was doing in their lives-I wanted them to vocalize what they sensed Him saying to them. I was so encouraged! One young man shared that he felt God leading him to take the gospel overseas! Another sees himself doing youth work in the future in a local church! All of this is evidence to me of the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m so grateful for the opportunity that God has given us to work with youth. What potential is wrapped up in everyone of these lives. Here is the question: Are we being faithful to the calling on us as a church to give them the truth and are we as adults modeling the life of a Christ follower to them?

What a tremendous blessing it is to be with our youth here at Camp. We are at the Word of Life Camp in Hudson, Florida probably 30 minutes north of Tampa. God is working in a great way in this camp. There are 417 students here from 20 churches. We have students in 4 different cabins. Our older guys are grouped together and our younger guys are grouped together. It’s the same way with the girls-thus making the 4 cabins. Each day is made up of incredible worship and Bible Study. The students are challenged to completely sell out to Christ, making Him Lord of their lives. I am really praying that the momentum from this camp will propel our students to continue in a radical walk with Christ. Why is it that so often we see believers get fired up about Christ at something like Camp or the Connect Conference and then it wears off? I know that God is able to conform us to his image and for that change to last! Lord do it in me!

What a blessing to see our people growing in their faith in Jesus Christ.

I’m writing this article after a Sunday in which we welcomed three individuals into our fellowship. Two were already believers and one young man came on Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ! Our task has remained the same–to win people to Christ & to disciple/equip those we reach. Our Sunday School is the best place to involve people in growth & ministry in the church. Research done by Thom Rainer of Lifeway Christian Resources revealed that of 100 people who attend the worship services only, 16 of those people will be with us five years from now. If 100 attend both Worship & Sunday School, 83 will still be active in the church after five years. Simply stated, those who attend Sunday School are five times more likely to remain in our fellowship. If you or someone you know is not attending our Sunday School, why not invite them to your class? We have some of the finest Bible teachers to be found anywhere. These teachers study the Word & minister to their class members.

Put June 20-23, 2010 down on your calendar for our Connect Conference. We will have church wide services each night beginning at 7pm. Pastor Anthony George will be our guest preacher. He is pastor of the Aloma Baptist Church in Orlando, Florida. This is one of our booming churches in Florida. Anthony is a wonderful Bible teacher. He will share dynamic messages that will be a great encouragement to the friends, neighbors, & co-workers that you bring. Music will be provided by the dynamic youth choir of First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia. This choir is over 100 strong & will lift the roof off of our building as they praise the Lord Jesus Christ. Our youth will join them in ministry throughout our city during the daytime. Monday through Wednesday, we will have a Block Party/Carnival from 5:45-6:45pm at the church right before the evening Conference meeting. The kids will love this. Special events & face-painting will accompany the regular booths that they will love. We will also have $1 meals available for anyone who wants to grab supper at the church before the services. We are doing this to make it as easy as possible for you to bring a friend. Be praying for hundreds to be involved in this special outreach to our city. Here’s how you can be involved:

1. Prayer. Please take these efforts to the Lord in prayer daily. We must have His Power!

2. Housing. We need at least 35 homes to house students. They will be in groups of 2-4(either guys or girls.) Please contact Jennifer Gladdish, she will be thrilled to hear from you: jgladd1@cox.net

3. Bring friends to the services. Ask for God’s leading as God prepares hearts to hear the gospel.

4. Pray about other ways to be involved. These may include: hosting a Bible Club, working at the Carnival, helping with the meals, mapping out survey routes, set up/clean up; giving financially & much, much, more!

I can’t wait for Mother’s Day on the 9th, a day that all treasure.

This is graduation time for some in our church. Congratulations! Our hats are off to the graduates & their parents! Our prayer is that each student will live the remainder of their lives with Christ on the throne of their heart. Our own Rachel is graduating from Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. We can’t believe it! It seems like she was born just a few years ago. Where does the time go?

Continue praying for the 75th Anniversary Committee of the church (September 12th) & for our Future Expansion Committee. Important days are ahead in the life of our precious fellowship.

On Sunday, April 11, Dr. Alvin Reid will be our pulpit guest. God is using Dr. Reid all over America as he has been unusually anointed in sharing the message of Jesus with God’s people. I really encourage you to be here. Dr. Reid will be speaking to our college students on their annual Spring retreat. We already have over 50 that are planning to be a part of this spectacular weekend. The title of the retreat is ADVANCE. We are praying that Jesus will Advance this group of students into the world to make a difference for the gospel’s sake. Any college students wishing to sign up can still do so by emailing us in the office at info@gatorchurch.com or by calling us at 352-373-3341. The cost is only $25 which includes lodging, food, and the sessions. You don’t want to miss this great weekend.

The Youth of North Central Baptist are on the move! Two Saturdays ago, 20 youth and workers went to a local Nursing Home to minister to the residents. We sang the great hymns of the faith, read the Easter story, gave testimonies, and presented the Gospel! You would have been so proud of these students. This past weekend I had the privilege with 25 others to go to the Florida Baptist Convention’s Youth Evangelism Conference in Orlando. What a blessing to spend those days with some of the brightest, growing Christian students that I know of anywhere!

Let me encourage all of our parents to sign their

students up for Youth Camp 2010! A deposit of $75 is due by April 18th. Word of Life Camp in Hudson, Florida (outside of Tampa) is the location for our camp this year. The dates for camp are June 26-July 3. Our students will absolutely love the activities and fun they will have. Our students will be encouraged to give over their lives to Jesus and to commit to grow in their Christian lives. I will personally take our students to the camp along with our wonderful youth workers. You can find more information on camp in this edition of the Lifeline. Don’t let any students you know miss this strategic week!

Happy Anniversary! Hold September 12th for our 75th Anniversary Celebration. Our wonderful anniversary team is making plans for us to experience the memory of the past and the promise of a bright future on this special day.

Thank you for the privilege of being your Pastor.
